In 1937, amidst the ongoing Spanish Civil War, Joris Ivens — with the support of Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos — directed and released The Spanish Earth, which was intended as an informational documentary for largely British and American audiences towards drumming up support for the beleaguered Second Spanish Republic.
